Wool: An Explanation of the Colour Categories
As no colour stands alone, categorizing colours is tricky and can be as variable as the weather.
The yellow category may range from lemon yellow to brassy yellows, yellows with a green cast or orange cast.
The orange category may contain orange, red orange, apricots, salmons and rusts.
The red category may contain bright orange reds to brick reds, blue reds and red violets.
The purple category may contain violets, blue violets and red violets.
The blue category may contain blues, blue violets, greenish blues and turquoises.
The green category may contain greens, blue greens and yellow greens.
The neutrals/lights category includes the browns, greys, blacks, very light values of various hues, but also the “misfits”: the dull blues, dull violets, dull oranges, dull olive greens and those saturated colours that have moved away from their original colour category. This category contains wools that have potential for backgrounds, outlines, and borders, and that tend to go with a variety of colours.
The specialty category contains wools dyed by more elaborate processes or techniques such as dip dyeing, transcolor, marbleizing, transitional dyeing, casserole, etc.
The multi-coloured category contains wools that due to their multi-coloured nature do not fit easily into a single colour category.
The swatches contain primarily 8-value swatches dyed in a variety of methods: gradation, transition, etc.
